How BFN Picks Work

Everything on Breaking Fantasy News is built from public data and published methods. Here's exactly how each part works.

News: verified and ranked

  • We follow a fixed list of NFL reporters and outlets, each assigned a trust tier (team and league insiders highest).
  • When several outlets carry the same story, we show it once, credit the outlet that reported it first at the highest tier, and list who else confirmed it.
  • Each story is tagged with the teams involved and a category (injury, trade, signing, depth chart and more), scored for fantasy relevance, and given a one-line fantasy impact note.

BFN Hot Picks: weekly projections

Hot Picks projects every fantasy-relevant player's points for the coming week, in your scoring format:

  1. Workload: expected fantasy points from a player's carries and targets (where on the field they happen), 60% season-long and 40% recent games, blended 70/30 with the points he has actually scored.
  2. Vegas: scaled by his team's implied point total from the betting line -- the sharpest public forecast of scoring.
  3. Matchup: a small adjustment for how many points the opponent allows to his position, pulled toward average early in the season.
  4. Sleeper's weekly projection: 40% of the final number (more for players with fewer than three games), so role changes and news show up quickly.
  5. Availability and weather: Questionable players are trimmed based on how they practiced; Out and Doubtful players are removed. In open-air stadiums, wind of 15+ mph trims passers, receivers and kickers.
  6. Kickers and defenses use team and opponent implied totals, indoor games, recent scoring, and how often the opponent gives up sacks and turnovers.

We tested these inputs against the full 2025 season before using them, and every projection is locked at kickoff and graded publicly after the week on the Hot Picks page, next to Sleeper's projection and the consensus rankings.

Top Waiver Wire

Players rostered in under half of ESPN leagues are ranked by the points they're expected to score over the next few weeks: snap share, share of the team's touches, expected points, work opened up by injured teammates, next week's projection, and how fast managers are adding them. QB, K and DEF are ranked as one-week streamers. FAAB ranges are a rough guide.

Rankings

Our rankings are a consensus: the average rank across several public ranking and draft-position sources, with injured players and teams on bye moved to the bottom.

Leaderboard scoring

The Leaderboard uses our league scoring: 6-point passing touchdowns, 1 point per 25 passing yards and 10 rushing/receiving yards, yardage bonuses at 100 and 300 yards, bonuses for 40+ yard plays, and standard kicker and defense scoring.
